I want to share a personal story as a cautionary tale, particularly for married women, about the impact social media can have on relationships. After 13 years of marriage, I recently separated from the father of my two children, and it all began with something as seemingly innocent as the internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Initially, technology and the internet didn\u2019t play a significant role in my life. But once I discovered social media, it quickly became a daily habit. My husband\u2019s job required him to be away frequently, and social networks became a way for me to cope with the anxiety of his recurring absences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One day, I connected with a man online who sent me a friend request. Over time, our conversations became a part of my daily routine. He made me laugh, offered advice, and soon, I found myself looking forward to our interactions more than anything else. Without realizing it, this man started to fill the emotional gap left by my husband\u2019s absence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We talked for three months, and eventually, he confessed that he had developed feelings for me. At 39, I felt emotions I hadn\u2019t experienced in a long time. Although I was married, our conversations turned more intimate, passionate, and intense. I fell in love with this man without ever meeting him in person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When my husband came home for vacation, I had to scale back my online conversations, especially in the evenings. However, I would still sneak away to chat, even hiding in the bathroom for a few minutes just to feel connected to this man. He had become like a drug to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One day, while my husband was engrossed in a soccer match, I seized the opportunity to chat with my online lover. But then, disaster struck. My daughter knocked on the door to tell me that her little brother had fallen in the shower and was bleeding. In my panic, I didn\u2019t close my laptop properly, leaving everything exposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While attending to our son, my husband came into our room during halftime and saw my open laptop and phone. There, he discovered the sensual photos I had sent and the messages I exchanged with this other man. Remarkably calm, my husband even continued the conversation with my online lover, who responded with “I love you” messages, unaware that it wasn\u2019t me on the other end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Afterward, my husband went to bed without saying anything, even as his favorite team played on the TV. When I asked why he had gone to bed early, he replied, \u201cI followed a soap opera more interesting than this football match on your computer.\u201d It was the most humiliating moment of my life. Shortly after, he left the house and returned the next day, but things were never the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For nearly two weeks, he didn\u2019t speak to me. Then, one morning, he asked me to leave our home. When I refused, he left instead, taking our children with him since I had no income to support them. I tried everything to make amends, but it was too late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eventually, I reached out to my online lover to explain the situation. He was sympathetic but revealed that he was married with four children and wasn\u2019t interested in leaving his family. He hinted at wanting me as his mistress, but I couldn\u2019t continue with this destructive path. I blocked him on all platforms and decided to try and move on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today, I\u2019m left alone, reflecting on the mistake that cost me my marriage. I pray for forgiveness and ask other women to be cautious with social media.
